RECORD REVIEW: Mohicans “trench & sky” / Suborbital “nebraska” (Boxing Clever Records)

Just when you think you might have a label figured out, they bring out the Mohicans/Suborbital split 7”.   While A*Star and Blindless shared similar qualities and even could have shared the stage with Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship and The Vanilla Beans, we take a new turn on the road known as Boxing Clever here as we bring out the doom metal.

Both bands have been described as post-apocalyptic metal and I’m inclined to agree that the overall harshness of this can only be a sign of the end of days.   This is something that if it doesn’t knock you out of your boots then you are a stronger person than I.

An interesting note about this split is that Suborbital (who I can find only minimal information about online) has the single song “nebraska” on the B side, yet Mohicans (who do have a Bandcamp page) have two songs on the A side.    I do enjoy to some extent the way that this is sort of not even and not just another one band/one song per side arrangement, and especially since this isn’t really like the first two records Boxing Clever has released either.

The Mohican songs come from a three song EP called “Sky/Ocean/Trench”, which are really just the three song names as well, and it can be downloaded at a name your price option on their Bandcamp, but yeah, this is much better to crank out as loudly as you possibly can on the vinyl rather than just the digital.

As far as labels go,  I do believe this release just solidified Boxing Clever as not only one of the best out there currently but also as one that you might now never quite know what to expect from them, but you do at least know it is going to be good and worthy of your ears.
