CASSETTE REVIEW: Treasure Mammal “10 Years of Cumming Full Circle” (Related Records)

I’m not sure how to describe Treasure Mammal exactly based upon this cassette, but I can tell you that they are somewhere between party rock and ska.   They have some elements of hardcore, but there is also some funk.   They can be punk, but they also seem to really favor reggae.

There are some horns and dancing ska on some of the songs, and overall this musically just reminds me of a cross between Adverse Side FX and Reel Big Fish, which is something I haven’t really heard since the early ‘00’s at the latest, so it’s definitely got the originality throwback thing going for it.

I’m assuming that this is meant more for the college kids, as twenty year old me would’ve loved this a lot more than thirty-something year old me.   I mean, they do have a song after all called “Spring Break” that just seems to be them listing off various sexually transmitted diseases.

Yes, I get the meaning in it and it does have some sort of poetic G.G. Allen license to it, but yeah, still a little bit awkward for me.  Although I suppose was never really meant to find your comfort zone, based upon the artwork, so it’s something you have to either just roll with or will most likely roll your eyes at.   To paraphrase Adverse Side FX “If you don’t like Treasure Mammal, then turn off this cassette and listen to something else”.    You have a 50/50 shot of liking this.   For me, it depends upon my mood.
