Between
the two sides of “Galapaghost” it can be quite challenging to piece together
what is happening, in the sense that the sides have similarities for sure but
seem to be two separate pieces of music rather than a fluent cassette.
On
Side A beats, screeches and synth fades turn into loops with Megatron type
sounds. This then becomes synth of doom
beats, distress beeps and then the twisting and turning of knobs met with an
overall sonar vibe. I like to think of
this- whatever the location- as being sort of cry for help. Someone is obviously in trouble and this is
the audio equivalent of lighting up the Bat Signal.
On
the flip side, we begin with a door bell sound, some really nice drumming and an
overall 8bit vibe with chirping and clicking noises. This leaves me a little bit puzzled as to how
it answers the plea of the first side, but hey, maybe I’m just overlooking
something greater. Maybe the first side
is part of the video game as well, but if you were going to show up to save the
day why would you ring the doorbell before entering?
The
end of the second side takes a turn into the soundtrack for Doctor Who, which
then makes me think that maybe this is an episode of the show on some level, which
is just fascinating and can be dissected another hundred ways until
Sunday. There are strictly audio
stories that exist for Doctor Who, so the idea of that mixing with a video game
is something that I can kind of get into despite the fact that I’m not really
the biggest fan of the Doctor.
