When
you see the title to this cassette, you think of it as more of a cassingle, but
it’s actually a proper album with the two titles just being the different
themes for each side. Though I will admit that I was more than a
little thrown off when this began with an audio clip of someone reading a book
for children.
Nonetheless,
the music comes on and it comes on hard.
Somewhere between I Kill Giants and Kane Hodder is where Them, Roaringtwenties
exists. They have singing and spoken
word parts, but all over the most powerful guitars. This
is math rock at its core (at least Side A), but the guitars sometimes lead to a
certain level of chaos that makes me think of ska, though, no, there are no
horns.
On
the flip side of this, we get ambient sort of something, chopped up and
delivered in various presentations that are sometimes loops but other times can
be a variety of shapes. The instrumental
nonsense (and I say that lovingly) is quite the departure from the first side,
but as I listen to it I can only help but think about how it might have been
worse had the second side just sort of carried on in the same manner as the
first.
Also
worth note are the random little 8bit beeps here and there, on both sides, that
cause me to instantly think, “Oh, Mario just got a coin”, amongst other nerdy
thoughts. So yeah, they have that going
for them as well. But this cassette is
as diverse from side to side as it is almost from song to song. It’s definitely a lot of fun energy and
should be enjoyed by all.
