CASSETTE REVIEW: camo tapes “Green”

The first in a set of three, the “Green” cassette by camo tapes is somewhat shrouded in mystery.  The cassette itself is only camo print whilst the j-card has the label logo on it, but otherwise you only can tell what this is physically because of the fact that it is called what it is (if that makes sense)   Also, it is rather interesting that these three tapes go together in the sense that you cannot buy them individually via Bandcamp but only as the set.

The songs found here within are mostly horns playing in a manner of jazz, some beats and then vocals sampled over it all.  This is the pattern that you will find throughout all three of these cassettes, so I’m only going to say this once and now you must also read these reviews in somewhat of an order.

A mixture of an instrumental PM Dawn and Tribe Called Quest, this particular volume covers things such as diet (vegetarian chili gets a shout out), nicknames for things (which someone really should transcribe and use), NPR and even my favorite line which he told his mom one morning (He referring to whoever is speaking in the audio clip: “I’m not going to school no more.  I’m going back to sleep”.

Not really knowing what to expect going in, I must admit that I am rather pleased by this cassette and it is one of the better versions of what is almost that spoken word poetry over improvised jazz feel.  Now I can’t wait for the next one, and kind of feel like I should listen to them all in a row.
