MP3 REVIEW: Mark Aubert / Bluezr split cassette (Carpi Records)

I was not familiar with the music of Mark Aubert or Bluezr prior to this release, but I realized when looking at the Carpi Records group of tapes released already that I’d most likely enjoy this.   Looking back, I can only suppose that I just wasn’t quite sure how much I was going to like this.

Mark Aubert has different demonstrations on Side A.   Birds chirp, synth comes out in waves and someone says “hi”.  There are drum beats, it gets upbeat and can turn into a little bit of synth pop rock.   It’s not quite 8bit, but it’s something in that genre, with funky beats ala Fatboy Slim.   There are also noticeable comparisons that can be drawn with A Tribe Called Quest, and considering that I listened to Tribe on cassette growing up this only seems appropriate.   There are some horns, loops on the jazz and even a piano piece before it gets ambient and trill type bells go on repeat.

On the flip side, Bluezr has sounds of piano and water.  It’s bringing out the notions of being at one of those holistic places, listening to the sounds and doing yoga perhaps.   Heavy drum beats then kick in, and we begin to hear what it sounds like when someone takes a hammer to the railroad tracks.   Bluezr finishes up somewhere between video games and seapunk, though managing to slow down still and calm things over.

This must sound great on cassette, but unfortunately for everyone who missed it (Myself included), this cassette is currently sold out and we’ll just have to wait and hope to get the next one.  Keep one eye on Mark Aubert and the other on Bluezr.
