MP3 REVIEW: Eliott Z Gualdi “EZG” (Carpi Records)

These three tracks total about a half an hour worth of music, so I can only assume that as a physical release this will be close to fifteen minutes per side with the first two songs on Side A and the third and final song on Side B.    We open with a sitar and synth, the only vocals are those of a “oh” or “ah”, hardly what could be considered lyrics.   Somewhat funky, blues-like guitar riffs start to come out as cymbals crash and this takes a turn for the jazz.

In many ways, I want to call this freeform something, but jazz doesn’t seem to do it justice.  Though it is freeform, sure, it has a lot of legs to stand on as well.   There are acoustic guitar strings being plucked and just an amazing amount of drum work going on here.

The end of the third track, and as “EZG” on the whole comes to a close, there is a sound that reminds me of a dusty old western, an aged cowboy kicking the dirt off of his boots, staring down someone else and simply remarking, “Let’s do this”.
