CASSETTE REVIEW: Tuurd “Uusi Tuuli” (cae-sur-a)

This could be unlike anything you have ever heard before and if only because it is not like anything I’ve ever really heard before.   It starts as distorted guitar loops, but quickly finds some drums as well.   This. Is. Heavy.

I’m digging the energy of this, as it borders on metal ala A Perfect Murder but yet also manages to bring out the faster paced punk ala Snot.   This definitely reminds me of something that would be either featured on a skateboarding compilation of music or someone might use this as their soundtrack while competing.   It’s one of those “Okay for skaters” types of metal in that way, which only really means what it means.

The second side begins like the old ECW theme song, back when they had a show on at 2 in the morning for an hour, and then the vocals come in.   I say “vocals”, but it’s not so much lyrics or screaming even as it seems to be this animalistic, primal growling.    It’s quite interesting in the way that it does sound human, only at the same time it also does not.

Before the second side ends, we go back to being instrumental and I can hear Motorhead coming out as well as some tinges of grunge, which mainly make me think of earlier Nirvana as well as Mudhoney.

Typically when I hear instrumental bands, especially of this nature, I wonder what kind of vocals to put over them in order to decide what they sound like.   Do they sing like Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain or Jacob Bannon?   For this particularly cassette though, none of those really make sense and this sounds perfect just the way that it is.

Please Note: cae-sur-a appears to no longer be a functioning label, but this tape is still available for purchase through the Carbon Records Mail Order by clicking here: http://www.carbonrecords.com/mailorder/catalog/catalog_id/CarbonDist_caesura_cv022
