CASSETTE REVIEW: Thunderegg “He’s Actually Pretty Cool Once You Get to Know Him: A Thunderegg Sampler (1995-2012)

What is a Thunderegg?  Wouldn’t the sound of thunder shatter an egg?  So perhaps it is the juxtaposition of the two words: the heavy and fragile, the bull in the China shop if you will.  Or perhaps it is an egg that, when cracked, reigns the thunder down upon you.

The world may never know the answer to such questions, but with this release we can come a little bit closer to getting to know the band Thunderegg.   This is the pop side of rock, but it certainly isn’t the bad side and it certainly isn’t that poppy either.

In many ways, I am reminded of Ben Folds.  In my notes, I first cited Ben Kweller, then realized he was the wrong Ben, but hey, maybe there is some Kweller in here as well.

Some light surf sound ala Weezer, The Rocket Summer and yes even Tom Petty come out in these where I’m sure any fan of music is sure to find something about them that they like.  (Afterall, 1995 to 2012 is a very long time)

Perhaps the best way to understand Thunderegg is to ask Thunderegg by pulling a lyric from one of their songs:

“If you like it, then it is
If you don’t, then it’s understood”
Thunderegg, on the music being good

I am in no way implying that I will enjoy the music of anyone who simply claims “I don’t care if you like it or not”, but something about the bravado of such a statement has certainly helped win me over on this music.
