Recently, I’ve been downloading and listening to music like crazy from Band Camp. This is a review of a group of songs by the same band I got from Band Camp- usually it constitutes an EP. This is a song-by-song review and it is never to exceed six songs. At the end, I will tell you the “Recommended Downloading Level”, which means whether or not I think you should spend your time downloading these songs. It’s on a scale from 1 to 5, 5 meaning that you should stop reading my review and download these songs immediately and 1 meaning that if you even think about downloading these songs your computer will be infected with a horrific bad music virus. Enjoy.
Cloudkicker “Portmanteau”
01: “Fourteen Nights” [4:48] -- This song starts with a slow build, but turns into this crazy rocking sound with a funky bass line. It then turns rather hardcore, as we get these heavy chords, fast paced drums and just an overall beat that you can mosh to should you so choose. There may not be any vocals, but this is still something really heavy that you could become a soundtrack for anarchy.
02: “Modulator/Demodulator” [4:12] -- More of the same here. The heaviness continues, but thus far this whole thing just feels like one long song. There was no real definitive place that made this song stand out from the one before it, but that’s not necessarily that bad.
03: “Of Smoke and Fog” [4:50] -- Now we get a somewhat more clear ending and knowing where one song ends and the next begins. With the song, the ending is drawn out for seemingly half of the song before it lets the next one start. The end of this song (going into the last track) has this sort of Nine Inch Nails feel to it.
04: “God Be With Ye” [6:22] -- I find most songs to be enjoyable when they start with heavy chords. Then, the pace picks up a bit, which is nice. Then we get into the moshpit style again.
These four songs are a little bit over twenty minutes and make for a very nice EP of sorts if you happen to like hardcore/metal/moshpit style music without any vocals.
Recommended Downloading Level: 2.5/5
