SPOTIFY REVIEW: The History of Colour TV “Emerald Cures Chic Ills” (Saint Marie Records)

In my mind, one of the most overused terms currently on Band Camp is “shoegaze”.   Everybody and their mother seem to be tagging their music as such, whether it be a misrepresentation on purpose or not.

Now, yes, you could be a rapper and look down at your feet while dropping mad beats, but that doesn’t really make you shoegaze, now does it?   No, shoegaze is something more than that, something with a lot of layers and distortion.

One of the best ways to find out what shoegaze is really supposed to sound like is to listen to this album by The History of Colour TV.   Not only do they have the long distorted parts, but sometimes they even go so far as to do the stops and starts within them and it is just wonderful.

If your band is tagged as shoegaze on Band Camp but you don’t really have any elements that sound like this in your music, then odds are you probably really aren’t shoegaze.
