CASSETTE REVIEW: Zanna Nera “Primeval Memory”

Zanna Nera is a band trapped in the 1980’s new wave era and I am not at all displeased by that.  They combine the sounds of Depeche Mode with New Order and most other things from that period and of that general idea that you would like.

“Primeval Memory” begins with electronic beats and then finds itself with drum machine loops.  It can sound like Nine Inch Nails’ ”Head Like a Hole” and the vocals can sometimes even be robotic in their nature.    While considerably borderline techno it is also quite a bit close to Devo, which is a strange line to tow.

Side B is a little bit darker somehow, at least to start, and it reminds me of Vagina Missile Crisis, which then makes me wonder whatever happened to them.  Somewhat Breakfast Club soundtrack, I do enjoy thinking just as well that this could be a combination of PiL and The Prodigy.   Let your head sink around that one for a little bit.

Really, if you are a fan of Depeche Mode (before their newer stuff that isn’t as good) and/or New Order (and who isn’t a fan of either of those?) then this would be a perfect cassette for you as you also could’ve found this in your automobile tape deck back before we ever knew what CDs were.
