CASSETTE REVIEW: Videobug “BX442”

There are two different ways to describe Videobug, but neither of them would be completely accurate.   On one hand, these songs full of electro-beats and female vocals bring to mind that “99 Red Balloons” song, yet all I know of the artist who made that song was that one song, so that’s not really a fair comparison.  (Plus, I know her name is pronounced “Nee-nuh”, but I’m not bothering to look up the correct spelling)

Similarly, this brings to mind Ladytron, who has been such a big influence on me and probably so many other bands that sound like them as well, but to say this sounds like Ladytron and leave it at that doesn’t really do it justice.   It could be dream pop, as much as it is electronic, and at times it is even instrumental, especially on Side B.

Perhaps this cassette and music on the whole was not meant to be classified or categorized.   As long as you like music that could be from the 1980’s or as recent as last year’s electronic vibes, then you will enjoy this and for old time sake (Let’s say… Pretty in Pink?) this should be best experienced on cassette.
