CASSETTE REVIEW: Uaxyacac “Double Seeker” (Port Vanderlay)

I feel like everything about music and time is so relative and really it just doesn’t matter in a lot of ways either.  Often, so-called music journalists struggle to review only the latest releases, yet what is time if not a number?   Does something released this week really have more merit than something released even back in 2011?   At the same time, music can be seen as being from a certain time frame, if only because that is the period in which the music was made most popular.

The sounds of Uaxyacac are most easily related to something new wave from the 1980’s, but that isn’t to say that people weren’t creating that sound before then and haven’t been since then, it’s just when it was in its prime and is thus most easily related to now.    Given that these synth-type beats and all were most present at a time when cassettes ruled the world, it is only natural to be hearing this on cassette though, and that doesn’t just come with my typical preference of hearing everything on cassette over every other medium.

While certain modern bands such as Illegal Wiretaps and even Brazil come out during these songs, “Double Seeker” has what I can primarily think of as an overall sound like the mighty Oingo Boingo, who was just so influential not only during their time but just continues to be to this day.   So if Uaxyacac can continue in this manner with their music, they could well be on their way to Danny Elfman status.
