First
off, I have to make note of the fact that this cassettes has primarily green
colors in its artwork while the tape itself is pink-ish… like a watermelon. I can’t think of too many other fruits right
now that are different colors inside and out (Curse you oranges and lemons!),
aside from maybe an apple or pineapple, but those might not make for the best
patterns in this way because the inside of an apple is white and the outside of
a pineapple is brown.
In
any event, the first thing you need to know about Watermelon musically is that
they do this almost unrecognizable cover of Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught
Stealing”, but it’s just awesome. It’s
all distorted and mashed up, and oddly enough if it sounded like more of a
straight up cover in the sense of trying to sound like Jane’s themselves, I
think it would just lose something from the band Watermelon and it certainly
wouldn’t be as good as it is this way.
There
is quiet, sort of soft synth, mixed with indie twee, break downs of noise beats
and just in general bands like Nirvana and High Pop come out at different
times. On the second side there are horns
like improv jazz amidst some distorted spurts.
The second side actually almost becomes punk rock on some level, which
is nice. The funny thing to me is that
in a lot of ways, this band reminds me of Blind Melon, which is only really funny
because they both end their names with “Melon” (Blind Melon, the original band,
is one of my all-time favorites, so you can’t mess with them and yeah, saying
that Watermelon sounds like Blind Melon is kind of a big deal)
