There
are a lot of underlying hints within the songs on “Electric Ocean” that can
help determine just what sound Scraps is aiming for on this overall synth pop
collection of songs. A song such as “Mushroom
Gods” brings out the psychedelic sounds and if it isn’t because of the word
mushroom being in the title it’s probably because the lyrics rhyme “Tokyo with
Yoko”. Then you get into a song like “Lonely
Motorbike” and I can hear 8bit sounds coming out, which might subconsciously be
due to that particular title bringing up memories of Excitebike.
There
is some new wave in here, as well as an odd resemblance to Ben Kweller, but
overall these are just some unique songs that take aspects of music I enjoy,
puts them into a musical blender and spits them back out in a way that is
pleasing to the ears and yet not overplayed either.
Spotify’s
next selection after this is by some hardcore band named Scraps, which is kind
of funny, so your best bet would be to get this as a physical release through
the label, as I plan to, because it is just that damn good.
