CASSETTE REVIEW: Video Daughters “Whiteness Where the Water Was” (Already Dead Tapes)

Video Daughters have sort of a split personality on this cassette, as their music seems to take one side on Side A and a different turn on Side B.   When we start “Whiteness Where the Water Was”, there are some heavy synth loops that turn into Weezer-ish type rock.  This is also like They Might Be Giants and is all around just some cool pop rock twee with bass sludge.

On the second side, we are treated to a nice guitar riff to start off, but then the music takes a different meaning.   Gone are the poppy feelings on the first side and in comes the angst.  This remind me of the first time that I heard Cloud Nothings, as that sort of just raw emotion and hell bent destruction is coming out in a non-violent way.  (Well, non-violent in the sense that it isn’t really metal or hardcore)

Feelings are what make the world go around, but if you’re expecting the same happy go lucky sound on both sides you’ll be in for a surprise when the second side cranks out its force.  I do enjoy the fact that it is sort of opposites in that way though.  It’s a nice contrast and probably has some deeper artsy meaning with the juxtaposition and what not.
