My first exposure to the band Big
Deal (who will probably be asked more times than they’d prefer “What’s the big
deal?” by seemingly clever interviewers) was a video sent out in a press
release. I liked what I heard, so I don’t
know why this album fell through the figurative cracks, but here we are.
People who say defining music as “female
music” or “male music” is sexist really need to start reviewing music. Though these songs are primarily filled with
female vocals, there are male vocals scattered throughout and sometimes he even
takes the lead. What would you call
that, smart people who are too easily offended?
I was pleasantly surprised by the
start of this album, as it has a clean rock flow that for once I don’t feel the
need to compare to Metric. I love Metric
and all, but it just seems like so many bands were coming out sounding like
them in some way, you know?
In the course of six songs, we get
treated to a pretty heavy number and then slowly go back down from there to the
point where it becomes acoustic and almost purely ballads. Some of the latter songs sound like Thursday,
but one in particular sounds an awful lot like Foo Fighters.
With the recent plethora of good
music coming out featuring female vocals (and the combination of male and
female vocals, to any given ratio), Big Deal is definitely a band that stands
out amongst the rest. They also have a
great ascending, peak and then descending quality on “June Gloom” and I feel that really helps overall as well.
