Has
anyone ever examined the effect that the movie “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” has
had on modern music? I remember a song
by Gatsbys American Dream called “Shhh! I’m Listening to Reason”, which is a
pretty funny quote from that movie. And
this band name is an obvious reference to Simone replying, “Au revoir, Pee Wee!”
as they part ways in the movie.
What
else is funny is that my wife got some language DVDs for our son and so he
occasionally is watching a cartoon panda bear teach him French. Every time something ends, the panda says “Au
revoir!” which puts this band name and that movie scene into my mind.
Musically,
this isn’t too far a stretch from the clean indie rock vibe you know and love
from this band that has seemingly been around long enough now to be too cool
for me to interview. If you liked Au Revoir Simone before this
album came out, you will still like them when you hear this. If you’ve never liked or heard ARS before,
give this a chance.
