REVIEW // Superman Earth One // JMS // DC

First off, I must admit that I’m getting all of these DC comic books from the library for free because I won’t pay for them.   The only comic book publisher that gets my money is IDW.   In any event, yes, this is yet another Superman origin story.

While I love JMS and pretty much all that he stands for, I didn’t find this to be that impressive.  I can fully understand how as a writer and fan this was something that he always wanted to do.   That being said, this isn’t that much different from the stories we already know.

So there exists this race of beings who are trying to find “the last son of Krypton” and they’re going around destroying all sorts of worlds until they find him.   Well, they’re at Earth now and they’ve found him, so a giant battle ensues.   Of course, good wins out over evil and Supes saves the day as you’d expect, but not without a little lingering discontent at the end of maybe Superman will do more harm than good if these are the types of problems he is going to attract.

I don’t have anything specific against Superman- I just feel that he’s cut and dry and the best thing he ever did (to paraphrase Batman) is die.   I also really love JMS, so if anyone should’ve been able to make this work it should’ve been him.   But yes, this felt entirely too much like just another Superman origins story (Which I’m sure will be coming soon enough any way if they reboot the movie franchise) for me to really care about it.
