The
Innernettes sounds like the name of a 1960’s all-female rock n roll band. There, I said it. (Although, back then no one would have known
about the internet itself, and so this might not be even a name worth
suggesting) Still, the fact that this doesn’t
sound like Shannon and her many Clams should be reason enough to check it out.
It
begins with 1980’s synth jams, audio clips and a whole lot of loops. Yeah, it’s going to be in that seapunk realm
that I can’t quite place but will now forever just associate with Illuminated
Paths. There is also a lot of
electricity on Side A, which is never a bad thing in my book.
Side
B opens with a bit about the Muffin Man, which is kind of fun but can only make
me think of that particular episode of “Dexter’s Lab”. There is soulful singing, so I want to call
it glo-fi, and then the lasers kick in and something else out in dreamy space. This all leads to a song that could be
straight out of “Baywatch” on a loop, with the audio clip “Hi Mom!”, which
takes us to our title.
There
aren’t really as many cassettes out there (or music pieces in general) that use
their title this well, but The Innernettes have found a way to succeed at
it. The overall vibe of this cassette-
and not just on Side B- brings out something like Tim & Eric would create,
only it isn’t quite as comedic in the delivery.
Just
when I begin to hear the music sound like the song that goes “Never gonna give
you up / Never gonna let you down” and the such, it turns out that the vocals
come out with that as well and it isn’t so much of a coincidence that it sounds
this way but rather some sort of cover.
This
is really a whole lot of fun but also really good. I just hope that people don’t see this as
being more of a party cassette and overlook the obvious talented being
presented here.
