SPOTIFY REVIEW: Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks “Wig Out at Jagbags” (Matador)

While I musically can find this as somewhere between Beck fronting TMBG or just flat out Tom Petty, what bothers me about it are the lyrics.  There is this line one must tread lightly when writing songs that ensures the  lyrics are easily accessible and can be sung along to on some level, sure, but you don’t want them to be too cliché or cheesy.

These lyrics come very close to being the kind of dumb that you can almost sing along with even if you’re hearing them for the first time.   It’s just that lyrics can be simplistic and basic on a lot of levels, but these just go above and beyond that, seeming as if they were written over one drunken period of fifteen minutes or less.
