Lady Gaga Born This Way (Interscope)
One of the main reasons why I think I like Lady Gaga is because her style is seemingly punk rock, but not. While Lady Gaga could become successful based on her merits alone she instead chooses to be, shall we say… flamboyant? Outrageous? Crazy? And these are qualities to me that make her punk rock in a way. Though what’s funny about that is when you look back to the early punk rock (Sex Pistols come to mind) it was more about the flash than the substance. Lady Gaga combines the flash and substance, which is rare these days.
I thoroughly enjoyed both The Fame Monster and its remixed counterpart The Fame. That seems to go without saying that I was very excited for this release. Musically, you can’t deny the pure musical talent any more than you can deny the comparison to Madonna.
What strikes me most about this album has to be the title track and overall lyrical content of the songs. While Lady Gaga has sometimes been silly with her lyrics (She did have a song on The Fame Monster about wanting to eat your heart), “Born This Way” symbolizes what every person in the world might not agree with but needs to come to terms with at some point in their lives or risk living in the dark until the day they day. As a heterosexual male are you attracted to other males? No. So in reverse, a homosexual male is not attracted to females. This is something that is born into you, not lifestyle choice you make or a phase that you go through in college. I really do believe that Lady Gaga- being as well known as she is- has really done a great thing by kind of pioneering this movement of feelings that other people have had but no one at her level has really captivated up until now.
Born This Way is oddly wonderful and I know it doesn’t seem like something I’d admit to listening to but I am not ashamed to say I am a fan of the talent.
