CD REVIEW: Florence + The Machine Ceremonials (Island)

Florence + The Machine Ceremonials (Island)
Ceremonials is the follow up to the debut album Lungs by Florence + The Machine, a band who I can only assume I am not the only one who wants to always mistakenly call “Florence Against the Machine”.    Still, I’m not sure how many people have heard about this band yet, as the first single hit radio airwaves in anticipation of Ceremonials people still seemed confused as to who was singing.   Maybe it has something to do with Adele, but I can’t 100% confirm that.   (Yes, at first I did also confuse radio songs between the two artists)
Florence + The Machine has a somewhat piano driven dark rock sound that can range anywhere from Enya to Tori Amos to Evanescence, only with the best parts of those bands coming out and not so much of the band.   (Personally, I really like how the songs can be rocking yet don’t hold the same generic radio metal as Evanescence)
If you enjoyed Lungs then Ceremonials will pick up right where that left off for you.   If you’ve never heard Florence before then it’s time to pick up this album and Lungs.   Despite sounding a bit like it, this is not rock entirely for women.  As a guy, it is okay to like these songs and have them blaring from your speakers.   They are powerful, they are intricate, they are simple, they are complex and they are universal.
