Cassette Review: Peter Maybaum "Photonenweit" (Raketenbasis Haberlandstrasse)

[€3 // https://raketenbasis-haberlandstrasse.bandcamp.com/album/photonenweit]

"Photonenweit" is one of two maxi-single cassettes from Rakentenbasis Haberlandstrasse and that is because rather than being a cassingle it has two songs on each side.    The particulars on here are that these songs come on keytar strong and have some form of something catchy from the 1980's coming out but I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly.

The first two songs have that vibe which also brings out some big disco beats and lasers.   It can begin to sound like New Order's "Blue Monday" but there isn't a strong comparison and it otherwise just sort of becomes something that could have been released in that same timeframe.

Side B has a bit more of a synthpop feel to it, but not in the traditional sense and more in the way that it is synth combined with pop.    Little laser beeps drop with drum machines and there is a pinball feel as well.   Words are spoken and it can even begin to sound angry by the last song but it is still good and mostly in vein of some forgotten new wave band.

These four songs represent enough of the music of Peter Maybaum that you should be able to form your own opinion of whether or not to like the music, but for me it's about that feeling of this being something that should be on cassette and whether it is intended to or not it does have a quality where it can get stuck in your head.
