CASSETTE REVIEW: The Trainables “Classical Elegance” (Algebra of Need)

This cassette by The Trainables goes by pretty quickly and there are a few key pieces to pick out of it after your first listen that should stick with you in later listens as well.   My first note about this was that there was a rather clear sneeze on Side A, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of the release I suppose.

Most of this cassette is made up of distortion and sharp feedback.   It’s closest to harsh noise in that respect, but isn’t as harsh as some of the harshest of noises I have heard before (See: Girl 27)  Somehow with that aspect of it as well, there is this quality that keeps you going back for more as it seems to just be entirely too short in its nature.

Some of the sounds in here can reflect that of a fax machine or modem, but for the most part it is a slightly lighter side- dare I say more minimalistic side- of what would be considered harsh noise.   As it comes and goes in seemingly the blink of an eye, it necessitates repeating and that just makes it all the more appealing.
