TOM ODELL,
WINNER OF 2013 BRITS CRITICS' CHOICE AWARD, ANNOUNCES HIS FIRST-EVER NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
U.K. artist Tom Odell will kick off his first North American tour on Thursday, January 24, at Pianos in New York City. He will be performing with his full band on the short run, which includes a show at School Night! at Bardot in Los Angeles on January 28. See below for itinerary. He will return to the States in March to perform at the SXSW® Music and Media Conference.
Odell has been named the winner of the Critics' Choice Award for the BRIT Awards 2013. He is the first male artist ever to have won this award. Previous recipients include Adele, Florence and the Machine and Emeli Sandé. Odell, who has been shortlisted in the BBC Sound Poll of 2013, made his television debut on "Later...With Jools Holland" last November.
London's Sunday Times praised the "gothic atmospherics, febrile melodramatics and sense of imminent collapse" of "Can't Pretend" and called "Another Love" "genuinely chilling" while NME predicted: "you'll be hooked by the arresting energy of his voice." Both tracks are from his EP, Songs From Another Love. The EP was released in the U.K. only, but videos of Odell performing these songs can be viewed at:
The 22-year-oldmusician grew up in the West Sussex city of Chichester, where he studied piano as a child and began writing his own songs at age 13. He eventually moved to Brighton, attracted by its vibrant music scene.
"I just didn't stop writing songs for an entire year," recalls Odell. "I used to stroll around Brighton with this massive keyboard and just go to these open mic's all around town - and it was so demoralizing, but also really good for me."
Plans are currently being made for the U.S. release of his full-length debut. "I hope the album feels human and real and that there are some flaws - because the flaws help make it what it is," says Odell, who finds inspiration in the works of Tom Waits, Elton John, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Kerouac and Terrence Malick, among others. "Really, I'd love to live in a time when music felt uncontrived and imperfect and gave people a real sense of elevation. When it's sad I want it to be really sad. When it's happy I want it to feel euphoric...I suppose I want the record to express the heightened feelings and emotions we all get in our lives."
