Lexington, Kentucky's Idiot Glee aka James Friley has debuted the first track off his new Life Without Jazz EP, set for a February 26 release on Hop Hop and on vinyl via Atelier Ciseaux/Bureaubureau. Stream his new track 'Pinkwood' at MTV Hive or at SoundCloud. Idiot Glee will support the release on a soon to be announced spring tour and performances at SXSW '13.
Life Without Jazz moves through the decades from 50s to 70s pop, building upon his 'post-doo-wop,' which made BBC, NME, The Guardian, Brooklyn Vegan and more, all fans of his 2011 Paddywhack full-length album. After a steady diet of Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music, Scott Walker, and Harry Nilsson, his new songs have become more adventurous and stylistically varied (he's currently working on a record replacing keyboards with guitars and piano), but still retain the chilling intimacy he's created in the past. These are songs for the lonely but still hopeful, for the homesick people yearning for the comforts of home, and for future lovers locking eyes across the club for the very first time.
When he isn't touring and playing shows as Idiot Glee, Friley stays extremely active in the Lexington music community. He co-owns a record label (Hop Hop), books shows in town as part of Lexington Lexington, DJs on the radio station at WRFL, and is a member of the music/video/art collective called Resonant Hole. In 2010, he scored a documentary on Kentucky artist, poet laureate, and professor James Baker Hall called Elbow of Light. He is now working on composing more movie soundtracks, as well as a sophomore full-length scheduled for a late 2013 release.
