When you listen to a release from The Illegal Wiretaps- whether it be only a handful of songs or much more- you never really know what you’re going to get. Will this be instrumental dreampop? Will it be more along the lines of Joy Division? Will it be along the lines of Pansy Division?
This is one of those times when what you get is really all over the place. We begin with a dance number, ala an instrumental New Order, but by the fifth song we get into what is the Casiotopia style (I put it in my dictionary, I’m using it) “Vanishing” pulls out the rusty acoustic guitar and vocals we’ve heard from The Illegal Wiretaps before and will probably hear again.
The last song is a little over twenty one minutes and has maybe four to five different acts in it. It begins with a sort of punk/hardcore guy scream-singing “The sky has gone out” with some backing guitar over and over. This cuts in and out before turning into a different loop which then changes several more times before the end.
If nothing else, you can always be assured that The Illegal Wiretaps will keep you on your toes.
