SBSR: Flashlights “So Close to Midnight” (HUG Records)

Flashlights So Close to Midnight” (HUG Records)
<1> “Ruby Sun” – Oddly, there is a band called “The Ruby Suns”.   Anyway, this has a pop synth sound to it.  It’s like The Wanted (You know that “Glad You Came” song), although since it’s probably not cool to like that semi-boy band, then you can listen to this without feeling as embarrassed amongst your friends.    It has a good dance beat for sure.   It’s got that Taio Cruz club feel to it for sure.
<2> “So Close to Midnight” – Now we’re really ready to go clubbin’ and I’m not talking about baby seals.  These vocals are very powerful though, which if you have a band like this you need them to be.   I like when he sings the title.   Unless you’re easily annoyed by anything with the slightest hint of pop, which means you wouldn’t like new wave anyway so this wouldn’t be right for you to begin with, you’re going to have to find something enjoyable in this song.   It has subliminal messages perhaps.
<3> “Fireworks” – This song does open like New Kids on the Block.  Then it gets all wild and dancy.   This song is closer to a rock steady type of beat and what not versus having that boy band sound to it.   Definitely more new wave.   It’s not like The Killers or Neon Trees exactly, but it is closer to a modern band along those lines than my previous pop comparisons.   It still has a beat you can dance to though.  He just said something about ecstasy.   Cheap pop from the rave kids.  I like how he talks in this song, almost like white rapping but not as goofy as something like Chumbawumba..
<4> “Slow Down” – I just did a review for a song with this title only by TWOS.  No relation I assume.  This song continues more like the previous song than the beginning of the EP.   It’s even got a bit of a Duran Duran feel to it.   Oh, so one “Duran” is okay but you draw the line at two, spell check?  Screw you, clippy the paperclip!!   Haha, clippy isn’t recognized by spell check either.   Some great new wave synth in here.
<5> “Sleep Alone” – This starts off quiet with just the powerful vocals and then kicks in.   He also says “I’m in love with your temper”.  I cannot agree with this line.  If you can’t sleep alone, I recommend getting a cat or dog.  Visit www.petfinder.com for more information on how to rescue your new best friend and never sleep alone again!
