SBSR: Neighbors "Scenic Nostalgia"

Neighbors "Scenic Nostalgia"

This is a SBSR.  If you don’t know the drill by now, learn it!

<1> “Homeward” – For some reason this song really reminds me of Weezer (specifically “Undone”) or Nada Surf.  Something along those lines, despite the somewhat screaming going on in the chorus.  There is also a very classic guitar sounding riff that opens this up and appears throughout the song.

<2> “Haven House” – This song kicks in a little bit heavier and faster.   There is a bit more screaming as well.  It reminded me at first of someone like Cloud Nothings, but listening to it again now I also hear some Hot Water Music coming through.  Nonetheless, it still survives on its own.   At about a minute and a half, it feels like we went into a different song and this is where The Canterbury Effect references begin.  This song also ends in true Canterbury Effect manner with some screaming and heavy guitars.

<3> “Bedpost” – The kick in to this takes me back to HWM almost, but still, I’m feeling this band just carving out its own sound on these songs by sounding along the lines of bands I listen to without directly ripping them off.  It’s the best way to make a new sound these days.  And here come some Weezer-like start and stops (“Say It Ain’t So”) with the whole screaming aspect of Cloud Nothings.  Very nice way to end the song.

<4> “Panoramic” – This song really kicks off like The Canterbury Effect and only has slight hints of HWM in parts of it. These lyrics are very powerful, so no one should really overlook them within all of this rocking beauty of a band as well.
